Google today said it was unveiling a virtual assistant tool at its annual developer conference in Mountain View.

This appears to be similar to what Google Now can do already, but it appears to be an upgraded verison of it. You can ask a question for an answer, and follow up with multiple questions, with Google picking the conversation out and returning the right answer.

“Think of the assistant, we think of it as a conversational assistant, we want users to have an ongoing two-way dialog,” CEO Sundar Pichai said.

If this is a big rebrand of Google as a virtual assistant, it appears to be more of a direct competitor to Alexa and Siri, as well as virtual assistants like Hound.

There are reports that Google might also unveil an in-home device similar to the Amazon Echo, so this could be an unveiling ahead of that device as it becomes more of a complete virtual assistant. We’re watching Google I/O closely to see what else Google has to announce.
